Samsung Electronics Co. has initiated a recall of more than 1.1 million electric stoves sold in the United States since 2013 due to reports of over 250 fires that resulted in significant property damage, the death of pets, and injuries to approximately 40 individuals.
The recall involves more than a dozen stove models equipped with front-mounted knobs that have been found to inadvertently switch on, leading to dangerous situations. To address this, Samsung is offering free locks and protective covers to customers to ensure the knobs remain in the “off” position. The stoves were sold at major retailers including Best Buy and Costco, with prices ranging from $1,250 to $3,050.
Although Samsung confirmed the recall and the availability of the safety fixes, the company’s official statement did not acknowledge the reported fires or injuries. The issue with front-mounted knobs is not unique to Samsung, as other major brands have encountered similar problems. Samsung is currently collaborating with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and industry peers to enhance safety standards.
This recall is reminiscent of Samsung’s significant 2016 recall of fire-prone Galaxy Note smartphones, which was one of the largest in the technology sector. However, in this instance, the company has opted to provide bolt-on fixes rather than offering refunds or exchanges for the affected stoves.
